A traumatic brain injury is an injury caused by sudden trauma or damage to the brain (i.e. a car accident, a fall, a sports injury, a violent assault, etc.).

In the area of concussion, the term mild traumatic brain injury or mTBI is used. 

 

How can a Speech-Language Pathologist help?  

Speech-Language Pathologists can help by: 

 

  • Assessing your speech, language, swallowing and cognitive skills (thinking, problem solving, social skills)
  • Providing therapy and treatment to focus on the areas of difficulty discovered in the assessment
  • Suggesting, if necessary, the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) (communication methods used to replace or add to regular communication such as the use of a tablet, communication board, etc.)
  • Suggesting, if necessary, diet modifications and swallowing techniques (such as different head positioning, etc.)
  •
